GI JOE: TALES FROM THE COBRA WARS

Monday, April 18th, 2011

IDW has just release a compilation of GI JOE short stories. While they’re prose stories and not comics, they do have illustrations, and while they all deal with the continuing conflict between the Joes and Cobra, they’re not part of one continuos story. Authors include: Chuck Dixon, Matt Forbeck, Jonathan Maberry, John Skipp, Cody Goodfellow, Duane Swierczynski, Denniss Tafoya, Jon McGoran and Gabriele Dell’Otto. My role in this project was as the co-editor, along with Jeff Conner. I did contribute a story, but it’s more of a short ‘bonus’ story. IDW decided to include it because it introduces a new GI JOE Charachter that they plan to use in the comic series.

Tales From The Cobra Wars is now available at most bookstores or can just be ordered here: http://www.amazon.com/G-I-Joe-Tales-Cobra-Wars/dp/1600108814/ref=pd_sim_b_7

World War Z Movie Update

Tuesday, March 15th, 2011

Two weeks ago, I was informed by the folks at Plan B that the movie version of ‘World War Z’ was on track to shoot sometime this year for a release sometime next year. I wish I had more details to pass on, but, as I’ve explained in the past, I am little more than a spectator. My involvement with this process consisted of selling the movie rights of my book to Plan B/Paramount. I have no creative input in the process, and have not even read Matt Carnahan’s script (although given his previous work, its bound to be pretty amazing). At this point, all I can do is sit on the sidelines and root for the team and with Brad Pitt, Matt Carnahan and Marc Forster, that’s one hell of a team!

Deadliest Warrior: Vampires vs Zombies

Wednesday, March 9th, 2011

After swearing to secrecy for the last few months, all of us can finally break our silence. Late last year Spike shot an episode of ‘Deadliest Warrior’ that featured zombies pitted against vampires. On one side, the zombie experts were Matt Mogk and myself, and on the other side, the vampire experts were Steve Niles and Scott Bowen. The show is due to air sometime this summer.

China is China

Wednesday, February 2nd, 2011

Last week, I was offered the opportunity to publish World War Z in mainland China. As excited as I was to enter a market of over 1 Billion readers, the offer came with just one catch. Because of the Chinese government’s strict policy on criticism, I would have to change China’s name to a fictional country. I told them “Thanks but no thanks, China is China.” Given that the whole point of the book is to be as realistic as possible and that I’ve taken every other country in the world to task (including my own beloved USA), no way was I going to substitute China’s name for “The People’s Republic of Greatwallistan”. The irony is, with China’s rampant intellectual piracy, World War Z will probably make it to the mainland anyway (if it’s not there already). Even if I don’t see a dime, at least people will be reading the real story.

The Extinction Parade: An Original Zombie Story by Max Brooks

Last Friday evening I published a free short story on TheDailyBeast.com. It’s the story on a zombie plague (not World War Z) told through the eyes of vampires. Hope you enjoy it.

Real World Crisis and World War Z

Friday, December 3rd, 2010

Mike Vlahos, a scholar, veteran, and friend of mine from the US Naval War College recently published an article that prominently features World War Z. This piece deals with America’s current cultural and geo-political challenges in the near future. It is intelligent and insightful, and I’m not sure my little zombie book deserves a mention. Definitely worth checking out.

Soldiers Zombie Hunting in Afghanistan

Tuesday, August 24th, 2010

_z_zombie_carouselGlobalPost’s Ben Brody reports on a strange book reading passion among soldiers fighting abroad.

A peek inside any airport bookstore will tell you that Americans want to read about vampires this summer. Vampire love stories, vampire hunting manuals, vampire comedies, classic novels rewritten to include vampires — apparently anything sporting fangs and makeup will sell.

As usual, the military is developing a similar obsession, but not vampires. With the Army, it’s zombies.

Dog-eared copies of Max Brooks’ “World War Z,” a first person account of the Great Zombie War, and his definitive undead-fighting manual, “The Zombie Survival Guide,” are found wherever soldiers relax and oil their weapons.

One soldier showed me a huge, razor-sharp Nepalese Ghurka knife that weighed about seven pounds — a lot of extra weight to carry on patrol. He explained that because killing zombies required a decapitating or skull-crushing blow, there was simply no better tool for fighting the undead in close quarters.

As uniforms and body armor become more and more covered in Velcro, Zombie Hunter patches have become hot sellers for tactical suppliers. At the German Post Exchange at Kandahar Airfield, that patch is continually sold out.

The problems of war against the undead have parallels with the problems soldiers face daily in Afghanistan. A zombie needs no food, water or equipment and pursues the living with implacable determination. For soldiers trying to defend a million dollar vehicle against a malnourished, illiterate man wielding a $40 roadside bomb, the similarity must be chilling.

PARAMOUNT OPTIONS ZOMBIE SURVIVAL GUIDE

Thursday, August 5th, 2010

In addition to Brad Pitt announcing that he’s attached to star in World War Z, Paramount has just optioned the movie rights to both “The Zombie Survival Guide” and it’s graphic adaptation “The Zombie Survival Guide: Recorded Attacks.”

BRAD PITT TO STAR IN WORLD WAR Z

Monday, August 2nd, 2010

You’ve probably already heard, but Paramount has finally confirmed a release date for “World War Z”; summer 2012. I’ve also been informed by Paramount that, in addition to executive producing the movie, Brad Pitt has formally attached himself as the lead.
