Recently I was given a unique opportunity to tour the Center for Disease Control in Atlanta, Georgia. During my tour I had the opportunity to speak with Dr. Ali Khan, the Director of the Office of Public Health Preparedness and Response, as well as the creative team behind their new zombie preparedness outreach program. My experience was as comforting as it was terrifying. The comfort came from seeing how intelligent, organized and proactive the CDC’s efforts are both at home and around the world. The terror came from the revelation that these efforts are now under fire from our own government. In the new political climate of deficit reduction and budget slashing, the CDC has watched its resources shrink by roughly one third. At a time when the global population is exploding, national borders are fading, and the existential threat of disease has never been greater, our first and best line of defense is being dismantled.

IDW has just release a compilation of GI JOE short stories. While they’re prose stories and not comics, they do have illustrations, and while they all deal with the continuing conflict between the Joes and Cobra, they’re not part of one continuos story. Authors include: Chuck Dixon, Matt Forbeck, Jonathan Maberry, John Skipp, Cody Goodfellow, Duane Swierczynski, Denniss Tafoya, Jon McGoran and Gabriele Dell’Otto. My role in this project was as the co-editor, along with Jeff Conner. I did contribute a story, but it’s more of a short ‘bonus’ story. IDW decided to include it because it introduces a new GI JOE Charachter that they plan to use in the comic series.

Tales From The Cobra Wars is now available at most bookstores or can just be ordered here: http://www.amazon.com/G-I-Joe-Tales-Cobra-Wars/dp/1600108814/ref=pd_sim_b_7

Two weeks ago, I was informed by the folks at Plan B that the movie version of ‘World War Z’ was on track to shoot sometime this year for a release sometime next year. I wish I had more details to pass on, but, as I’ve explained in the past, I am little more than a spectator. My involvement with this process consisted of selling the movie rights of my book to Plan B/Paramount. I have no creative input in the process, and have not even read Matt Carnahan’s script (although given his previous work, its bound to be pretty amazing). At this point, all I can do is sit on the sidelines and root for the team and with Brad Pitt, Matt Carnahan and Marc Forster, that’s one hell of a team!
